Spray-On Fabric

Fabrican

The world’s first instant sprayable clothing onto the body is developed by Dr. Manel Torres, a Spanish fashion designer, who runs Fabrican. In the infancy of the spray-on clothing, the “fabric” would break when it was sprayed onto the body. Now, the spray-on clothing can even be taken off in one piece, washed and worn again.

Torres was in search of a method that would produce comfortable clothing quickly. The idea first came about in 1977 after he saw people spraying silly string at a wedding. Instead of the silly string, it is replaced with non-woven fabric in liquid form for it to be sprayed easily onto any surface.

In the fashion industry, fabrican spray-on clothing gives freedom to not only fashion designers, but consumers in exploring unique designs and customizing their own clothing. They can create additional pockets for their clothing.

The fabric is sprayed from an aerosol can or a spray gun under high pressure and is formed by short fibres that are linked together seamlessly. These fibres can be either wool, linen or acrylic. Also, when the fabric is torn, it can be easily mended by spraying over the torn part instead of going through the hassle to sew it up.

Torres is not only aiming at the fashion industry, but is keen in applying the concept in other fields - medical, hygiene, automotive and industrial design. Torres is currently focusing on the shift from fashion to medical with Fabrican as he is interested at the significant potential the medical industry possess in merging with fashion. The spray-on fabric may be kept and sustained in a sterilized aerosol can, which can be used to instantly create spray-on bandages without applying pressure on the wounded area, or even spray-on casts with varying degrees of toughness to suit the user’s needs. Torres is also developing a non-invasive system to deliver medicines onto a wound directly through drug patches placed on the skin, such as the nicotine patch. Patients will also be able to select the colours of the spray to co-ordinate with their own unique style or to match with their skin tone so as to hide the patch.
