Clothing has existed ever since Adam and Eve consumed the forbidden fruit and realized the need to cover themselves. Clothing then, were in the form of leaves. Subsequent clothes that followed were made from natural elements: grass or leaves, animal skin or furs and bones or shells. It was usually draped over the body or tied with other materials like vines. Bones were later used to hold draping clothes together before needles were made from these bones for sewing.

The method of weaving of baskets was later integrated into clothing. Each piece of garment was tailor-made for the consumer and sewn by hand until the sewing machine was invented in 1790. Mass production of sewing machines made the process of producing clothes to be more efficient and cheaper.

In the Middle Ages, most nation’s royalty and upper classes controlled fashion trends and certain premium fabrics and materials were only reserved for the royalties. Peasants and Commoners who were seen in those fabrics could even be punished! In fact, Louis XIV’s interest in fashion was one of the reason why Paris became the hub for fashion. People were beginning to improve on the aesthetics and fabrics of the clothing subsequently, which led to the different designs and patterns we see everyday.

Fashion has evolved over the years and become a part of our everyday lives. It has become more colourful and sophisticated. People have gradually grown accustomed to the distinct styles of clothing in their own era but in our modern age, the rapid advancements in technology have introduced an avenue for it to be incorporated into fashion.

There is no specific date as to when fashion and technology first combined, but it is only in recent times when it started to be increasingly prevalent in our world - when consumers were demanding more of fashion and of faster solutions to their problems. Based on some of the fashion technologies we have chosen to focus on, it can be seen that wearable technology is popularized in the 21st century. The combination of fashion and technology will continue to make our lives easier, improve functionality and perhaps, make us look more aesthetically-pleasing as well.
