LED T-shirt

The T-shirt has always been a canvas for creativity and personal expression. Now, the LED T-shirt brings it a level higher. It comprises of a normal T-shirt of any kind and a non-bulky and flexible LED panel attached to it. The LED panel is almost completely invisible and the T-shirt looks plain and ordinary, until it is turned on.

T-shirt OS

An example would be T-shirt OS, the first wearable and programmable T-shirt and a current prototype of Ballantine’s and CuteCircuit. The T-shirt is 100% cotton with a flexible and washable LED screen and a 6 hour battery life. It is able to display custom messages and animations on the T-shirt controlled via an application on a smartphone, providing a digital platform for personalization and expression of creativity. It can be connected to Twitter to display tweets or Instagram images to the world, share tracks or even capture images with its built-in camera, microphone, accelerometer and speakers.

The Twitter Dress

CuteCircuit, a fashion technology company, also designed a Twitter dress for Haute Couture, worn by Nicole Sherzinger at the launch event.

The black evening gown is a combination of fashion and advanced technology that lit up the turquoise carpet. It radiates elegance and is embellished with 2,000 LED lights and 3,000 Swarovski elements. During the launch event, tweets can be sent in to be displayed on the Twitter dress in real time when anybody hashtags #tweetthedress.

Since the LED T-shirt is programmable and allows a freedom of expression, it can be adapted to suit various needs. It can be designed according to the user’s style, preference and interests, to look appealing in his own way. This technology provides an opportunity for marketing, where people can be paid to wear these LED T-shirts to display product advertisements and gain product recognition for a particular company since the shirts can be programmed to broadcast a message based on the user’s discretion. The LED T-shirts can also provide an alternative light source in darkness.

Furthermore, these LED shirts can provide customizability to third-party developers, who can innovate and use this basic feature to create new and improved versions of this product. Thus, this can also increase the potential market for such goods. However, since there is such a freedom, there is no limit as to what can be displayed on the LED T-shirt and users may abuse this freedom to exhibit sensitive wordings or inappropriate ideas. Furthermore, there is also the question of whether it becomes a public nuisance if the lights are too bright or distracting.
